Nice to meet you!

Nice to Meet You is a video conferencing tool that leaves nothing to the imagination...Literally!

This post begins my focus on video conferencing. I had been to some staff developments in the recent past that dealt with video conferencing (Breakthrough Collaborative) and I was honestly surprised to see how far the technology had come in such a short time. Being a video-oriented person in my own right, I turned to YouTube for some fresh views and found a video highlighting Nice to Meet You, a video conferencing tool. NTMY is a creation of V-Cube which is based in Japan. It requires no special software and turns virtually any room into a conference room. It is packed with features! I downloaded a PDF of the online help guide because it presents the full range of capabilities in detail with graphics and screen shots. If it was 2017, and I was a distance graduate student, I am sure I would be contributing to my online lectures on video, at least in some capacity (group work, projects). Of course, there is always the chance of technology getting the better of you, as is plainly evident in this YouTube clip called Video Conferencing OOPS! Enjoy!

Well, well, well! Voip in action! The Nice to Meet You video (which played so well--I'm wondering how they saved it on YouTube so that it didn't skip and jump) was fabulous--it's really incredible what's possible now. It makes me really understand why distance work is possible, too. I look forward to finding ways to use it in our educational setting. I particularly liked being able to work on a document together, either through the text box or through showing your desktop.

I wonder if it will take a generation or two for video conferencing to really catch on in a very widespread way.

It strikes me that such a big part of using the web now is anonymity. Reading the comments on youtube, for example, it seems less likely that a lot of the petty, silly comments would be made if the commementers were readily identifiable.

In the meantime, there are a lot of other conferencing/collaborating media that preserve anonymity while adding features. Has anyone done any IM reference recently? A bunch of the providers can do cobrowsing and can "push" web pages/databases to patrons, which seems a basic but useful feature.

I've recently read that there are concerns that this generation of teenagers will be less personally responsible as a group since they have always had (in their memory) the opportunity to participate in many things anonymously.
The interesting question for me in this is whether the web allows teens to experiment with behaviors fairly "safely," and to learn the consequences of "antisocial" behavior anonymously--without having to move to a different place or find a whole new friend group...or maybe I'm just being a Polyanna.

I think the experimental aspect re: antisocial behavior is a pretty interesting idea. Definitely better to be ostracized on the My Chemical Romance message board than at school, I would think...

The technology is great and will lead to school-to-school meetings and collaborations.
Pen-Pals have taken a back seat to key-strokes and cameras.

The video is hilarious. I will confine my dressing and clothing adjustments to my bedroom.

As with any push forward or advances in conducting business there are usually some glitches. However we should never believe we are alone---Big Brother & Little Sister are always watching.
